FRANK COLETTA - JUDGE'S NOTES
These are the 6 students whom I have picked for recognition on March 13th
The Shen student art show was filled with award winning art work. There were at least several works in each category that could have won awards. I will make a recommendation for next year that we might separate digital art, drawings, paintings, photography, etc. into their own category. I feel It is unfair to put a painting up against a drawing. I also recognize that these are young art students and that they all grow at different levels over time. I do not want any student to feel that they didn’t win because they weren’t good enough. There was a ton of work turned in this year that should have awards next to their works. The level of work in all fields of art is excellent. I congratulate each student and their teachers for what you all have accomplished. All the winners exhibited excellent works that are in my opinion worthy of first place regardless of age, grade level or medium that they worked with. Outstanding! First Place: Casey Gao – Painting This artist had to withdraw a beautiful painting because it is now entered into a regional show. That painting and this painting exhibit a level of ability that needs to be awarded and encouraged. The subject matter and the ability of this student to express themselves is truly impressive for a high school student. The level of control, skill, and ability is a thing of beauty to see. Well done! Second Place: Artimis Fang – Drawing This drawing caught my eye as soon as I saw it. It is well balanced, sensitive to lights and darks, but what really caught my attention was the beautiful detail that this student was able to produce in such a simple subject was truly remarkable an representative of their high level of ability at such a young age. Excellent! Third Place: Maria Kokkinides – Painting For a young student to paint at this level was truly surprising. The ability to take two pumpkins and produce a master piece is awesome. A small, delicate, sensitive, master piece needing no comment by me because it is that good. Your handling of color and shadows is exquisite as well as placement and design. Honorable Mention: Christopher Puglieze – Photography This is a simple photo of a young girl looking down, maybe in deep thought. The contrasts of darks and lights was beautiful and yet so simple. The tones that were achieved made this a beautiful portrait deserving recognition. Your ability to recognize and control the elements of black and white photography while making a statement make this portrait an excellent work to be rewarded. Honorable Mention: Anna Zheng – Painting I kept coming back to this painting over and over again because I am an artist, former teacher, and minister who deals with human life in all its phases. This painting confronts life and death and what’s left after death. It’s hard to express that in a painting because it deals with physical, emotional, and spiritual issues. I want to say that the artist showed wonderful skill and ability in making a powerful statement with remarkable insight to the human condition that we all will experience. In one painting you addressed multiple subjects that artists have been struggling with since mankind starting drawing on cave walls. Well done!!! Joey Ferrari Honorable Mention: Graphic Design This one caught my eye because of the use of color and letter design. I liked the large letters that curved around each other in a well-organized composition. The bottom section with the strong design and color balanced the overall composition. This digital composition was simple and yet well designed and colorful. |
